Nominato da Napoleone comandante in capo dell'armata francese in Italia, il 13 agosto 1800, in sostituzione di Massena, il Generale Brune costrinse gli austriaci comandati da Bellegarde ad abbandonare le loro posizioni sul Mincio, passò l'Adige, occupò Verona, s'impadronì di Vicenza, di Montebello e fu ricevuto in Treviso dove il 15 gennaio 1801 firmò l'armistizio che preparò il Trattato di Luneville.
