Ref. 6263. Cal. 727 mechanical Valjoux movement, serial no. 30XXXXX. 37 mm steel case, original black mk1 bakelite bezel. Silver SIGMA dial, applied gold indexes, black subdials. Acrylic glass. Steel Oyster folded link bracelet n. 7835-19, final link n. 271. Clasp code 1-71. Original vintage screw down pushers and crown. Movement, caseback and dial, all signed. Circa 1971. The watch is in exceptional condition.
At time of cataloguing the watch is functioning, recently revised. For true collectors, first series of the 6263 production. N.B.: nowadays it is really hard to find on the market an original mechanical Daytona with all its original parts (production stopped with ref. 6269, 6265 and 6263 around 1988, when they were replaced by the automatic Daytona ref. 16520, commonly known as Daytona Zenith), mainly due to the fact that production stopped many years ago. This ref. 6263, manufactured between 1971 and 1988, with screw down pushers (not present in ref. 6262) and a larger crown compared to previous references. The timepiece we offer dates back to the beginning of the production and feature a SIGMA dial; it's a very rare dial used by Rolex in the early 70s, not only on Daytonas, to indicate that there was also gold (white gold indexes). The letter σ was put in the dial at 6 o'clock before the sign "T SWISS T". We are not sure why but considering that in the early 70s began a lack of interest towards automatic watches, in favor of quartz ones, it is likely Rolex started to underline the presence of precious metal in its dials, almost as a quality seal. Sigma dials were manufactured until the late 70s and among Daytonas it is a "plus" among collectors.
